HAL 9000 goes crazy because human beings casually order him to lie to his own crew... you create a being that is not designed to even understand (let alone practice) deception... and it won't end well if you order it to give it a try anyways.<br /><br />People would do well to read the book (NOT the movie to be clear...) "I, Robot" which (being a lot of short stories) has most of the stories begin with some form of the question "what EXACTLY did you order the robot to do?".<br /><br />It is hard for people (as people) to forget that we only care about our own survival because it has been conditioned deeply into life itself over a billion years. Slightly different is something like an ego which (ideally) translates more or less into our ability (for better or worse) to remain confident in the face of negative feedback. At worst ego becomes something different... we can't process and adapt to being wrong (for lack of processing power) and we become irrational until we figure it out.Opetrenko Maigonoreply@blogger.com
